7 ways to begin the semester right

Its the start of the new semester and classes are in full swing. Here are some tips to get you on the right foot.

Getting Organized

You have to start the semester right by having a plan. Familiarize yourself with campus and location of your courses. Hold on to the syllabi you’re handed at the beginning of the semester as they cover course expectations, assignments, due dates, grading, and other class policies. Write down a schedule to organize your study time.  Set a few short-term and long-term goals that will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the semester. You can succeed in your courses using these steps that will help you achieve each goal.

Textbooks 

Textbooks can be costly for each course. Your school can have different resources to alleviate the cost. Sometimes the bookstore has books on reserve you can use for the semester. You can get a book voucher from financial aid.  Sometimes you can use an old edition of your textbook but as your professor first. There is a great site called Openstax that carries free ebooks.

Keep up with the professor.

Make sure to go to class on time. Some professors will not have the time to stop during the lecture to  Utilize your professor’s office hours to clarify any class concerns,

Choosing a major

Most students are not sure what their future career goal. Going into college as undeclared isn’t a bad thing. Your advisors, professors and career center are valuable resources to guide you step by step in helping you find what’s right for you. Remember you can always ask for help if needed. You can take your time to choose your major with these tips.

Make Friends

The first few weeks of the semester are the perfect time to connect with your new classmates. This is the time to mingle and meet new people. It’s great to make friends in your courses in case you overslept.

Join a club

Try joining a new club or trying a new sport. Getting involved in your college community will help you gain leadership skills while having fun.

Self-care

Remember to give yourself some time to relax. Eating healthy and exercise is essential to keeping up with your studies. It will give your body the natural vitamins and nutrients it needs to thrive. If you feel you cant manage your courses, you can go to the Counseling center to discuss your feelings.

College is a time to explore your interests and start your career path. Just stay focused and continue working on your educational goals.
